Prepare Trees For Future Storms
There are many ways to help your trees prepare for future storms. Here are some of those ways:

Preventative Pruning: Preventative pruning to thin the top of the tree – the canopy – reduces wind resistance and in turn, the force that can damage branches or even the trunk of the tree. In addition, pruning removes dead branches that can break easily, causing damage to the tree and the surrounding landscapes. Strong branches are better able to withstand high winds.

Mulching: You need to protect your tree’s root system. A wide ring of mulch around your tree’s base will help minimize damage, maintain water and nutrients, and slow down any erosion around the trunk.

Lightning Protection: We can recommend a lightning protection system for your landscape trees that directs electrical forces down a series of wires and into the ground, away from the tree itself. Watch For Cavities: An open cavity in a tree’s trunk, just like in a person’s mouth, creates a weak spot in the entire structure. A tree with strong, healthy wood is more likely to survive destructive, stormy weather. Have a professional arborist inspect your tree if you suspect weakness.

Follow Best Practices
Trees need to be pruned or trimmed with purpose. Pruning, like any other skill, requires knowing what you are doing to get the right results and to not damage a tree. The old idea that anyone can be a landscape pruner is a far stretch. Plenty of trees are killed or ruined annually from improper techniques than by pests and other hazards. Keep in mind that pruning is the removal of certain tree parts that are not required, that are no longer effective, or that are of no use to the plant. It is done to supply additional energy for the development of flowers, fruits, and limbs that remain on the plant. Pruning, which has several definitions, essentially involves removing plant parts to improve the health, landscape effect, or value of the plant. Once the objectives are determined and a few basic principles understood, pruning primarily is a matter of common sense.

The need for pruning can be reduced or eliminated by selecting the proper plant for the location. Plants that might grow too large for the site, are not entirely hardy, or become unsightly with age should be used wisely and kept to a minimum in the landscape plan. Advances in plant breeding and selection in the nursery industry provide a wide assortment of plants requiring little or no pruning. However, even the most suitable landscape plants often require some pruning. The guidelines presented in this publication should be helpful when pruning any plant.
