Tree Maintenance

Tree Pruning For Beginners – June 2019: Part 1

The objective of pruning is to produce strong, healthy, attractive plants. By understanding how, when and why to prune, and by following a few simple principles, this objective can be achieved.

Reasons For Pruning

The main reasons for pruning ornamental and shade trees include safety, health, and aesthetics. In addition, pruning can be used to stimulate fruit production and increase the value of timber. Pruning for safety involves removing branches that could fall and cause injury or property damage, trimming branches that interfere with lines of sight on streets or driveways, and removing branches that grow into utility lines. Safety pruning can be largely avoided by carefully choosing species that will not grow beyond the space available to them, and have strength and form characteristics that are suited to the site.

Pruning for health involves

removing diseased or insect-infested wood, thinning the crown to increase airflow and reduce some pest problems, and removing crossing and rubbing branches. Pruning can best be used to encourage trees to develop a strong structure and reduce the likelihood of damage during severe weather. Removing broken or damaged limbs encourage wound closure.

Pruning for aesthetics involves enhancing the natural form and character of trees or stimulating flower production. Pruning for form can be especially important for open-grown trees that do very little self-pruning.

April 2019 – Cherry Tree & Chestnut Trees

Taking care of of your cedar trees and shrubs is just a part of having trees and shrubs on your property. You will have to be mindful of various kinds of insects, fungus, weather damage, and of course, just the normal wear and tear a tree will go through.

Cherry Trees
Cherry trees make beautiful specimen plants. They are generally short-lived to about 20 years because they are prone to a variety insects and diseases. This does not deter the tree from being used in gardens as its attractiveness far outweighs its short life-span. Quite useful for adding early spring color to a landscape, cherries also sometimes attract birds with their small single-seeded fruits produced during the summer. Spring blossom color, leaf color and fall color all vary from species to species.

Chestnut Trees
There are about five species of chestnut native to North America. It was, at one time, a prominent hardwood tree in the eastern United States. However, in the late 19th century, a fungus known as chestnut blight, introduced accidentally from Asia, destroyed most of the native stands. The wood of the chestnut had many commercial uses ranging from furniture to railway ties.

April 2019 – Oriental Arborvitae & Northern White Cedar Trees

Taking care of your cedar trees and shrubs is just a part of having trees and shrubs on your property. You will have to be mindful of various kinds of insects, fungus, weather damage, and of course, just the normal wear and tear a tree will go through.

The Northern White Cedar is a very adaptable landscape plant with fragrant foliage. The leaves are glossy and green, covering the trunk from the ground up and the branches are up-sweeping. The trunk is dark, grayish brown and shreds. Excellent for hedges. The yellowish-brown fall foliage is often considered unattractive.

Northern White Cedar Care
Fertilize with formulations that promote woody, strong growth rather than excessive foliar growth. Avoid storm damage by pruning young trees to a single trunk. In winter, use twine or burlap to protect branches from breakage. Take care not to over prune as the tree does not recover well.

Oriental arborvitae grows as either a large shrub or a small tree. Starting off rather dense and compact, the canopy opens up with age. The needles are scale-like and bright green. It is an excellent choice for hedges as it often only needs trimming at the top. Cultivars include ‘Bakeri’, ‘Blue Cone’, and ‘Elegantissima’.

Oriental arborvitae Care
Fertilize with formulations that promote woody, strong growth rather than excessive foliar growth. In winter, use twine or burlap to protect branches from breakage. If areas of the tree are winter burned, new growth should resprout. Does not respond well to shearing. Take care not to over prune as the tree does not recover well.
