Don’t Top Your Trees: Part 2 – Shock

Continuing with our write up regarding topping your trees. the second condition you could expect to see is shock. By removing and exposing the tops of your trees, your tree will encounter shock. This is due to the infiltration of sunlight to parts of the tree that have not seen direct light in any previous seasons. This exposure of direct sunlight will end up scalding parts of the tree including limbs and bark.

What To Do If Your Tree Is In Shock
Mulching will help reduce the amount of shock. You should apply 2 to 4 inches of organic mulch around the tree’s base. Also, don’t be tempted to feed your tree fertilizer. Fertilizers have a high amount of nitrogen that could burn the trees roots.

How To Prevent Disease & Insect Infestation
Another condition you could expect your tree to suffer when topping it is exposure to insects and disease. By cutting a limb you leave a large wound that will take a considerable time to heal. When this happens, the possibility of decay will be greater and more likely to happen.

Water & Drainage
Insure your tree has a good drainage system around it and don’t over water. If you end up over watering your tree, it could literally drown

Don’t Top Your Trees: Part 1 – Starvation

One of the worst things you can do is to “top” your trees. Tree topping is defined as the practice of removing the entire top, or whole top, of a tree. This includes the large branches and/or trunks from the top of the tree leaving the stubs or lateral branches that are too small to take on the role of a terminal leader.

Starvation

There are a number of conditions that will result in the topping of a tree. The first result is starvation. When you remove the tops of your trees, you take away any chance of your tree getting enough nutrition.

How To Prevent Starvation

Starvation can come in many ways on top of topping it. If you trees have fungus, attract insects, or are surrounded by pollution, these can all be causes of starvation.

What To Do If Your Tree Has Been Topped

The only way to repair a topped tree takes anywhere from 3-5 years to accomplish. It involves selective thinning of the sucker growth. For example: year one remove two suckers, year two remove two more suckers and so on. The finished product will have a thicker trunk with one large sucker growing from it.

If your tree has been topped, you should do everything you can to keep it from going into shock and to keep it from starving. Please call us to get a consultation since each tree is different and unique.

Springtime Checklist For Shrubbery: Part 3

You will want to make sure you have your ducks in a row for when Spring time comes.

  1. Prep Damaged Lawn Areas for Spring Seeding.

In colder climates grass starts growing in April, but early spring is a good time to test the soil’s pH so that you can assemble the right amendments. Remove turf damaged by salt, plows, or disease to prepare for the seeding that should follow in a few weeks. Work in a ½-inch layer of compost to keep the new seed moist, increasing the germination rate. Begin seeding once forsythia starts blooming in your area. In warmer climates, March is a good time to add the first dose of fertilizer and crabgrass treatment.

Remove dead turf with a square metal rake, then flip it over to spread compost.

  1. Neaten Up Hardscape Surfaces.

Rake escaped gravel back into aggregate walkways and patios, and order more gravel to spread in large depressions, which often form near the driveway’s apron. Refill joints between flagstones by sweeping in new sand or stone dust; water with a hose to set it, then repeat. If the freeze-thaw cycle has heaved pavers out of place, remove them and replenish the base material as needed before setting pavers back in. Use a pressure washer with a low pressure tip to remove slippery algae spots or leaf stains from patios and walkways.
