May 2016 – Tree & Shrub Care – Birch Trees

Taking care of of your birch trees and shrubs is just a part of having trees and shrubs on your property. You will have to be mindful of various kinds of insects, fungus, weather damage, and of course, just the normal wear and tear a tree will go through.

The Birch Tree
Birch trees are a popular choice for the home landscaper here in the Tri-Cities. Their unique bark and beautiful leaves make them perfect shade and ornamental trees. However, they do demand a little care and attention. Not just any site or soil condition will do and many trees fail to reach maturity due to site and soil factors.

Probably the most important factor for a healthy birch tree is maintaining its soil. The soil determines not only how well it takes nutrients and water but also how efficiently the tree can use those nutrients. This will determine whether your birch can successfully withstand the stresses of growing in an urban environment or fend off pests such as the bronze birch borer. As a homeowner, the best gift you can make to your birch tree’s soil and to the long-term viability of your tree is the addition of beneficial mycorrhizal fungi.

May 2016 – Tree & Shrub Care – Ash Trees

Taking care of of your ash trees and shrubs is just a part of having trees and shrubs on your property. You will have to be mindful of various kinds of insects, fungus, weather damage, and of course, just the normal wear and tear a tree will go through.

The Ash Tree

The Ash tree is a distant cousin of the olive tree. More than 65 species of the ash tree family can be found in North America. Here in the Tri-Cities they are a little fewer and farther between, but they’re still here. Ashes vary, depending on type, from small, rather slender specimens to very large deciduous trees. All Ash trees have opposite compound leaves and very stout twigs. Like maple trees, ash trees have winged seeds called samaras. The wood of the ash is sought after for its suppleness and flexibility and is still used to make sports equipment, for tool handles and in the manufacture of furniture.. Depending on soil and climate, ashes also make attractive and versatile landscape trees.

The most important factor for a healthy ash tree is taking care of the soil. The type of soil determines not only how much nutrients and water the plant has access to, but also how efficiently the tree can use those nutrients. This can determine whether your ash can successfully withstand the stresses of growing in an urban environment or fight off infections such as Ash Yellows. As a homeowner, the best thing to give to your ash tree’s soil and to the long-term viability of your tree is the addition of beneficial mycorrhizal fungi.

Taking care of of your cedar trees and shrubs is just a part of having trees and shrubs on your property. You will have to be mindful of various kinds of insects, fungus, weather damage, and of course, just the normal wear and tear a tree will go through.

Cherry Trees
Cherry trees make beautiful specimen plants. They are generally short-lived to about 20 years because they are prone to a variety insects and diseases. This does not deter the tree from being used in gardens as its attractiveness far outweighs its short life-span. Quite useful for adding early spring color to a landscape, cherries also sometimes attract birds with their small single-seeded fruits produced during the summer. Spring blossom color, leaf color and fall color all vary from species to species.

Chestnut Trees
There are about five species of chestnut native to North America. It was, at one time, a prominent hardwood tree in the eastern United States. However, in the late 19th century, a fungus known as chestnut blight, introduced accidentally from Asia, destroyed most of the native stands. The wood of the chestnut had many commercial uses ranging from furniture to railway ties.
