Renting or Buying A Stump Grinder

Some people just like to do the work themselves, and that is just fine.  The only question is really rent? Or buy?  The renting option makes sense if it’s just a one-time job. If you’re regularly performing yard work that involves cutting down trees and removing stumps, it’s worth your while to buy a stump grinder instead.

We recommend doing some number-crunching and determining if you will have enough jobs to pay for the stump grinder you want.  All you need to do is calculate the costs of time, rental costs, and fuel to determine if the cost of buying a stump-grinder is better than renting a stump-grinder.

Things to Consider when Buying a Stump Grinder

When renting a stump grinder, you don’t have to be as concerned about the available features; you just need something that will get the job done. If you’re going to buy this type of machine though, you’re going to want to make sure that it’s right for you. A few of the things to consider include:

  1. Horsepower – More horsepower means getting the work done faster and you can tackle bigger jobs.

  2. Size – The bigger the grinder is, the less maneuverability you have. You should look for a stump grinder that has a relatively slim profile. This will also make it easy for you to reach into tight places as well as help to keep fatigue at bay.

  3. Cutter Disk – Ideally, the cutter disk should be made out of carbide. Its teeth should be extremely sharp and show no signs of wear. Keep in mind that this component is sometimes called the cutter wheel.

  4. Depth – At the absolute minimum, your tree stump grinder should grind down to a depth of 20 inches below grade. That way, your yard won’t be riddled with lumps and bumps.

  5. Weight – If your stump grinder is too heavy, you’ll never want to use it. Try to get one that has a lightweight design. Otherwise, you should plan on how you will transport a heavyweight stump grinder.

How Your Trees Are A Great Investment

In a struggling economy where home values are dipping or having a tough time maintaining, trees are an simple solution to increasing the value of your home. The beauty of trees, flowers, and other vegetation enhances the appeal of a property and could possible raise your property value anywhere between 10 and 20 percent. A well chosen tree landscape adds curb appeal to your home and makes a home look established within it’s environment. If you have nosy neighbors always popping their heads over the fence, trees can create a privacy barrier from neighbors. Real estate professionals believe mature and healthy trees have a strong impact on a buyer’s decision making process, as older trees carry their weight in return investments.

Trees provide a great return on your investment when it comes to being energy efficient. Trees provide shade during the summer, reducing your cooling costs up to 25 percent. Trees also reduce the heating effect on the planet by absorbing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen, so cooling your home at the same time as cooling the planet is a win-win situation for you and the earth. Trees also act as windbreaks for your home, reducing your heating bills in the winter months. And as you know, we have our fair share of wind during the winter here in the Tri-Cities.

Trees are mood enhancers, they spark memories from our childhoods, like when we used to climb the Apple tree or play on the tire swing tied to the old Oak. We see them as nature’s playgrounds, they are the backdrops for family photos and a shady place to gather for lunch. Trees are the past, present and future. You may have planted that tree with your children, you enjoyed pushing your babies in the swing and now your grandchildren. When you do sell your house, the new couple will see these possibilities for their family.

Trimming your trees properly, maintaining their health, structure and growth will enhance all of these possibilities. Trees that are not properly pruned and taken care of can become headaches, and heartaches down the road. So show your trees a little tender loving care, giving thanks to trees, and the benefits will be endless.

Now, if you do not feel comfortable or simply don’t have the proper tools to do any of this pruning, we are more than happy to do any of this pruning for you. Also, if you have multiple trees to prune or just don’t have the time to do it, we are here for you.
