Here at Top Tree LLC, we offer our guidance, experience, and knowledge to all of our clients and potential clients with a high level of passion.  We look forward to talking shop with you and no matter what, we welcome any questions you have regarding your trees and plants on your property.

Let’s continue with our New Tree Planting Series:

  1. Fill the hole firmly. Pack soil around the base of the root ball to stabilize it. If the root is wrapped then carefully cut and remove the fabric from around the trunk and root ball to prevent girdling and to facilitate root growth. Fill the remainder of the hole, firmly packing the soil to eliminate air pockets that may dry out roots. Reduce air pockets by watering periodically while backfilling. Avoid fertilization around the time of planting.

  2. Stake the tree if necessary. It has been shown that trees establish more quickly if they are not staked at the time of planting. Staking may be required, however, when planting bare root stock or planting on windy sites. Stakes may also offer protection against lawn mower damage and vandalism. One or two stakes used with a wide, flexible tie material on the lower half of the tree will hold the tree upright and minimize injury to the trunk yet still allow movement.

June 2017: New Tree Planting – Part 4

Here at Top Tree LLC, we offer our guidance, experience, and knowledge to all of our clients and potential clients with a high level of passion.  We look forward to talking shop with you and no matter what, we welcome any questions you have regarding your trees and plants on your property.

Let’s continue with our New Tree Planting Series:

  1. Mulch the base. Mulch is organic matter spread around the base of a tree to hold moisture, moderate soil temperature extremes, and reduce grass and weed competition. Common mulches include leaf litter, pine straw, shredded bark, peat moss, or composted wood chips. A two to four inch layer is ideal. More than four inches  may cause a problem with oxygen and moisture levels. Piling mulch right up against the trunk of a tree may cause decay of the living bark. A mulch-free area, one to two inches wide at the base of the tree, reduces moist bark conditions and prevents decay.

  2. Provide follow-up care. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Water trees at least once a week and more frequently during hot, windy weather. When the soil is dry below the surface of the mulch, it is time to water. Continue until mid-fall, tapering off as lower temperatures require less-frequent watering.

Other follow-up care may include minor pruning of branches damaged during the planting process. Prune sparingly after planting and delay necessary corrective pruning until a full season of growth in the new location has occurred.

Completing these nine simple steps will maximize the likelihood that your new tree will grow and thrive in its new home. When questions arise regarding your tree, be sure to consult with Top Tree LLC or a tree care or garden center professional for assistance.

Avoiding Tree & Utility Conflicts

Many factors should be considered prior to planting. Here are some helpful hints for tree planting around utilities.

Determining where to plant a tree is a decision that should not be taken lightly. Many factors should be considered prior to planting. When planning what type of tree to plant, remember to look up and look down to determine where the tree will be located in relation to overhead and underground utility lines.

Often, we take utility services for granted, because they have become a part of our daily lives. To ensure us the benefits of reliable, uninterrupted service, distribution systems are required to bring utilities into our homes. These services arrive at our homes through overhead or underground lines.

Overhead lines carry electricity, data, and communications. Underground utility lines may also carry those mentioned, plus water, sewer, and natural gas.
