Tree Maintenance

May 2016 – Atlas Cedar & Cedar of Lebanon Trees

Taking care of of your cedar trees and shrubs is just a part of having trees and shrubs on your property. You will have to be mindful of various kinds of insects, fungus, weather damage, and of course, just the normal wear and tear a tree will go through.

The Atlas Cedar
The Atlas Cedar, which is originally from North Africa, is an irregular, wide pyramidal tree that makes a beautiful tree. The most common type planted is the Blue Atlas Cedar which has stunning silvery-blue needles. Needles are 3/4 to 1 inch in length. The silhouette is wide and open.

Fertilize with fertilizer formulas that promote woody, strong growth rather than excessive growth. Pruning longer branches when the tree is young can help it resist heavy snowfalls later in life.

Problems
Can be affected by weevils, borers, root rot, and sapsuckers. Atlas cedar is not particularly cold hardy, but is often sold in marginal climates. As a result, cold damage can be a problem.

Cedar of Lebanon
The Cedar of Lebanon is the most cold-hardy species of cedar. It is very similar to the Atlas Cedar, but with a much thicker trunk. The foliage is bright green and the canopy is open and irregular. Like the Atlas Cedar, it is not suited to street plantings, but makes an exceptional specimen tree.

Fertilize with formulations that promote woody, strong growth rather than excessive growth. Pruning is generally not necessary to grow a strong tree, but may be required to prevent low-hanging branches from interfering with pedestrian traffic.

May 2016 – Tree & Shrub Care – Deodar & Easter Red Cedar Trees

Taking care of of your cedar trees and shrubs is just a part of having trees and shrubs on your property. You will have to be mindful of various kinds of insects, fungus, weather damage, and of course, just the normal wear and tear a tree will go through.

The Deodar
Normally from the Himalayas, the Deodar Cedar is a dense, and soft-textured pyramidal tree with slightly tiered branches. The leader tends to be somewhat bowed. The needles are the longest of any cedar, measuring from 1.5-2 inches in length. As the tree ages, lower branches tend to bend towards the ground, and the silhouette can be quite striking.

Care For The Deodar
Fertilize with a Deodar Cedar with formulations that promote woody, strong growth rather than excessive foliar growth. This tree can be pruned to control outward growth (to about halfway along the branch), but no new growth will sprout from leafless wood. Best planted in large properties

The Eastern Red Cedar
The Eastern Red Cedar is quite common in the wild in the eastern United States, but rarely used in gardens. The foliage is fragrant (especially when crushed) and develops from a need-like younger leaf to a scale-like older leaf. Foliage tends to a bright green in color. Cold winter weather may cause the foliage to turn a pinkish hue. Produces clusters of blue berries that can be an attractive winter snack for birds. Perhaps most effectively used as a hedge or windbreak, especially in marginal soils.

Care For The Easter Red Cedar
Fertilize with formulations that promote woody, strong growth rather than excessive foliar growth. Tends to be drought, salt, and pollution tolerant. Watering is generally not necessary except in severe drought conditions.

Cherry Trees
Cherry trees make beautiful specimen plants. They are generally short-lived to about 20 years because they are prone to a variety insects and diseases. This does not deter the tree from being used in gardens as its attractiveness far outweighs its short life-span. Quite useful for adding early spring color to a landscape, cherries also sometimes attract birds with their small single-seeded fruits produced during the summer. Spring blossom color, leaf color and fall color all vary from species to species.

Chestnut Trees
There are about five species of chestnut native to North America. It was, at one time, a prominent hardwood tree in the eastern United States. However, in the late 19th century, a fungus known as chestnut blight, introduced accidentally from Asia, destroyed most of the native stands. The wood of the chestnut had many commercial uses ranging from furniture to railway ties.
